Uganda glance 2011

Medical missionary work in Uganda began in the late 19th century.  An early Anglican physician, Sir Albert Ruskin Cook, is even credited with saving the Bagandan people from extinction.  An early government official in the newly independent Uganda declared that Cook’s arrival marked the greatest advance in the welfare of his country.

The Ugandan Catholic Medical Bureau and Ugandan Protestant Medical Bureau jointly oversee 43 hospital and 350 health centers.  Over half the countries nurses and midwives are trained by the mission health sector.  Many of these facilities are located in rural, underserved areas.
