Katawa Clinic

After only a few years of operation, the Katawa Community Clinic is providing services to approximately 40,000 outpatients per year. Staffed by a dedicated staff including just two physician assistants and one nurse, this rural site without electricity may see up to 150 clients daily. In an area spanning 10,000 square kilometers, there are only a few doctors. Located in a rural area near beautiful Lake Malawi, Katawa charges a nominal fee to the impoverished population but otherwise relies on external support.
Faced with a significant budget shortfall in 2011, the clinic appealed for assistance. AMHF stepped in with half the operational support for the facility, including staff and medications. AMHF also identified a need to improve malaria diagnosis and treatment and so provided rapid test kits and effective combination therapy.
