Kenya glance 2011

The Kenyan medical system is generally more developed than that of many other African countries, but significant regional disparities exist and health indicators remain poor.  There exists a large and robust mission health sector, both Catholic and Protestant, dating to the early parts of the 20th century.  The Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK; Protestant) and the Kenya Episcopal Conference (KEC) oversee 970 health facilities accounting for 10 million patient contacts per year.  The Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS) is a joint effort providing low-cost, quality pharmaceuticals.

Many of these institutions have or are making the transition to a fully national staff, raising concerns of financial sustainability.  AMHF CEO Dr. Jon Fielder served in the country for four years and Executive Director Jonathan Mwiindi is a Kenyan native, bringing an in-depth knowledge of the medical system and needs.
